Dalits and Work
The reason that Dalits are considered “untouchables” is because of the nature of the work they traditionally undertake – cleaning sewers and toilets with their bare hands. It was thought that these activities made it likely that they would spread illness, and thus the segregation.
Today Dalits work as effective slaves, as they are held accountable for debts incurred by prior generations.
Dalits have various sub-categories depending on their jobs, these include:
- Chamar - leather-workers
- Mahar - carcass handlers
- Bhangi - night soil scavengers
- Chura - sweepers
- Dhobi - washermen
