Dalits and the Law

The laws of India give Dalits equal rights, but unfortunately these rights are not upheld, and are routinely abused. Education, housing, employment, food, healthcare and personal safety are all out of reach for Dalits.

Under India’s constitution there is no caste system, but in practice the discrimination against Dalits is in full effect. This has given rise to Dalit political activity, particularly in India’s northern states.

The caste sytem in India is in effect if not under law then in practice.
